2009 US Footvolley National Championships
                                                                    December 19 - Miami Beach
                                                                              'Adriano Repeats'

The 2009 US Footvolley National Championships were pushed way back to the end of December.  With this new date, the players had to play with additional outerwear to fend off the cool temperatures on the beach.  This December day started in the mid-60's but hit the low 70's with a slight breeze of about  15 miles an hour.  Not the best conditions for a footvolley tournament; but nonetheless the athletes were pumped and ready for action.

Group Play

The Heads of the groups were: Adriano/Nando, Paulo Ricardo/Lucas, Sergio/Nildo, and Farberoff/Marquinhos.  The top two teams would advance
out of group play straight into the Quarter-finals.

Quarter-finals:

#1 Adriano/Nando defeated Candido/Gialucca
#2 Paulo Ricardo/Lucas defeated Bernard/Diogo
#3 Menezes/Shubert defeated Farberoff/Marquinhos
#4 Cadinho/Renatinho defeated Daniel/Benny Astorga

Semi-finals

#1 Adriando/Nando defeated Paulo Ricardo/Lucas
#2 Cadinho/Renatinho defeated Menezes/Shubert

Final

Adriano/Nando defeated Cadinho/Renatinho in a thrilling 3-game finale with the game decided on literally the last possible play
 (score tied at 20-20).

Overall, the tournament had some great stories.  In particular, Cadinho/Renato's ascent to the final was historic in winning two hard-fought 3-set matches before losing the final in another marathon on the last point.  Talk about effort!  The boys from Coconut Creek are the
new force to be reckoned with now!

Champs

Adriano Rego repeats a title he won back in 2007.  This time with a new partner in Nando.  Rego has played in every single US Footvolley National Championship final since 2005.  Winning the last one.  Congratulations!

                                                    2008 US Footvolley National Championships
                                                                          'A Clinic on South Beach'

A last minute cancellation by a not to be named establishment on Miami Beach forced US Footvolley to hold its 4th National Championship right on the beach without much fanfare.   Prohibited from displaying sponsor boards and music, the usual hype surrounding footvolley event somewhat dwindled.  This year's version of nationals appeared more a friendly tournament amongst friends than anything else with the exception of when one team played.  That team came to give a footvolley clinic and it did.   Eduardo Ribeiro Fuiza and Miguel Habib provided beach goers, fans, and fellow athletes a real lesson in the virtues of partnership, patience, and efficiency in totally dominating from start to finish at the 2008 US Footvolley National Championships without appearing to even sweat in doing so.  The two played good 'ol fashion Rio de Janeiro throw-back footvolley.  No useless flash and unnecessary showmanship - just flawless technique and synchronized defensive teamwork.  A real treat for coaches.  A real lesson for the younger athletes to remember: fundamentals matter!

The 2007 Champs Adrian/Junior (both of Deerfield Beach, FL) fought valiantly in the Championship match and even came away winning one set; but the newly formed duo of part-time Rio de Janeiro & Miami residents were simply too much for even the defending champs.  Another familiar face completed the podium of winners today.  Claudio Rodriguez, who alongside Fainor Lima, proved that their strong showing at the 2008 Hollywood Pro Footvolley Tour was no fluke came out from a 3rd place group position and nearly reached the final until losing to the eventual champs.  In the other semi-final; upstarts Daniel Rego and Nicolas Cardozo (Pensacola, FL) nearly reached the title match but lost steam in falling to Adriano/Junior in a tighter match than the final score indicated.

Tournament MVP:  Miguel Habib

Bragging Rights

This is the ultimate bragging rights event for US Footvolley athletes.  Unlike the Pro Footvolley Tour events which have international players competing in them here it's the US based players only.  The rivalries are West Coast versus East Coast; Broward versus Miami-Dade Counties, Southern California versus Northern California, etc.  So far in the three years of US Footvolley National Championships the trophy has not been held by any team outside of Florida.

US Footvolley National Champions history:

2008 - Eduardo Ribeiro Fiuza & Miguel Habib (both Miami Beach, FL)
2007 - Adriano Rego & Junior Pereira (Deerfield Beach, FL)  Hollywood Beach, FL (Sept 8-9)
2006 - Brenno Souza (NMB, FL) & Paulo Ricardo ' Orelha' (Deerfield Beach, FL)  (December 16-17)
2005 - Franco Cappuotti (Hollywood, FL) & Claudio Rodriguez (Deerfield Beach, FL) (December 10-11)
